Image of the Week: Referendum in Sudan
Today the people of Southern Sudan voted in a historic referendum. In a ballot that will continue through the week, if they vote to secede from the north, Africa’s newest nation will come into being on July 9, 2011. Although the name of the new nation has not been decided yet, the global community hopes that this referendum leads to the end of a two-decade long civil war that has seen 2 million people killed and millions more driven from their homes. It is an important choice being made by Africa’s largest country and the ballot paper shown here provides a simple option to the largely illiterate electorate: place your thumbprint below the single hand if you vote to secede, below the two firmly clasped hands for unity. How much simpler and how much more vital can a graphic designer’s job get?
