The Next Printing Revolution
Most of us are familiar with on-demand printing. Any neighbourhood copy shop can put together a decent set of business cards, posters, holiday snaps or a birthday card for the pet goldfish. But what about something more three dimensional. A silver ring perhaps or maybe that’s a bit too extravagant. Shapeways is a relatively new company based in the Netherlands that can print and ship you all kinds of 3D bits and bobs.
What makes it such a great service however is the growing community they are encouraging to use their facilities. A quick tour through the gallery brought up all kinds of interesting stuff (there seems to be an awful lot of people getting rings made). The service supports a variety of 3D authoring tools from Google SketchUp to AutoCAD as long as you send them the right format. Pretty straightforward although its worth checking out their community pages and forums. I also came across this little gem (video below) by a company called Interactive Fabrication. More fun than serious tool this is another reason to save your lunch money for an iPad. It would be great to know if anyone has used this service in India and if not get cracking, give us a shout in the comments below.
